Thousands of Jamaicans remain without access to piped water nearly 11 weeks after Hurricane Melissa, according to an update from the Ministry of Economic Growth and Job Creation.
Water Minister Matthew Samuda, speaking at Wednesday’s post-Cabinet media briefing, said approximately 34,000 residents are still affected, with recovery efforts facing ongoing setbacks.
He pointed to Darliston in Westmoreland as one of the areas experiencing the most significant challenges. The situation has been compounded by electricity outages, which have slowed restoration work at water facilities.
On Tuesday, East Westmoreland Member of Parliament Dr Dayton Campbell told the House of Representatives that electricity has not yet been restored to any of his constituents. However, the Jamaica Public Service (JPS) has since indicated that at least one area is expected to have power reinstated by the end of the week.
Minister Samuda said progress is dependent on the return of electricity but assured the public that measures are being put in place to bring relief to affected communities.
