Skye Diamond might be more popular for being the daughter of the legendary Mavado but the upcoming dancehall artist is making a name for herself and following in her father’s footsteps to the pinnacle of her career. “Closer” is one such track that will pave the way for Skye Diamond to do just that.
Released on Friday, July 26, 2024 at midnight, “Closer” was produced by Levels_LVL and R0twist from Levels To Life Productions and is a collaborative effort between Levels_LVL and Skye Diamond. It is inspired by recent trends, providing a fusion between pop and dancehall. The lyrics are based on a romantic story that reflects on a girl who is in love but too shy to express her feelings. So, she secretly admires the guy from a distance, trying to build the courage to eventually make him hers. It’s a common theme portrayed by a talented artist in her own unique way.
Levels_LVL and R0twist have always wanted to work with Skye Diamond, and after years of waiting for the right time, it finally happened. They intentionally crafted this beat for her, a classic dancehall beat reminiscent of the popular Diwali Riddim from the early 2000s.
“To be honest, from 4 years ago, I heard a song from her and always wanted to do a record with her. As a producer, I always had full confidence, that I could take her to the next level,” stated Levels_LVL.
“The link was officially made by a friend of mine called Ricardo Nash aka Ricki. I was having a conversation with Ricki, expressing how talented Skye Diamond was and his reply to me was: ‘Yo Levels, [she] a me little sister and me a go mek you get har pon a record.’ It never happened until 4 years after that conversation. However, it still happened and I’m glad, grateful and proud of it,” Levels_LVL continued.
Within an hour of its release, “Closer” debuted at number 8 on the US iTunes Reggae Chart, a first for the dancehall singer. It then made an upward trajectory to number 2 before the hour after that. By 7am, Skye Diamond and the entire team woke up to see “Closer” claim the number 1 spot. Levels_LVL is ecstatic and hopes this will catapult him and R0twist to the next level in their career as a production powerhouse as well.
Skye Diamond herself is moving “Closer” to the top of the dancehall industry and she won’t stop until she gets there.
