Former West St Mary Member of Parliament Jolyan Silvera has been sentenced to 20 years’ imprisonment after pleading guilty to manslaughter in the death of his wife, Melissa.
He received an additional sentence of 20 years and 10 months for using a firearm to commit an offence. The court ordered that both terms run at the same time.
The sentences were delivered moments ago in the Supreme Court of Jamaica by presiding judge Bryan Sykes.
Silvera, a former representative of the People’s National Party, admitted guilt to the charges in February and told the court that he had been provoked by his wife.
He was initially charged with murder but entered a not guilty plea to that offence.
The former lawmaker has remained in custody since January 2024.
