PORTLAND, Jamaica — Fourteen Haitians, including five women and a baby, landed at a beach in Kensington, Portland, on Saturday afternoon. Their vessel reportedly came ashore shortly after 2 p.m.
Five of the Haitians attempted to flee from the police but were captured in a remote area near two cell towers. The remaining individuals, including the women and child, were found in the community and along the beach.
One man, who ran into the bushes in an effort to evade capture, was pursued and apprehended by law enforcement officers.
Tensions escalated when members of the media, who arrived to report on the scene, were verbally confronted and ordered off the beach by the police, raising concerns about transparency.
The Haitians are now being questioned by the police. It remains unclear what led to their voyage and how long they were at sea before arriving in Jamaica.
This incident adds to a growing number of migrant landings in Jamaica, highlighting ongoing regional migration challenges.
