Another 139 farmers and families in St Elizabeth have received free land titles under the Pedro Plains Irrigation Expansion Project, bringing the total number of beneficiaries to 282.
The titles were handed over during a recent ceremony in Beacon, where Agriculture, Fisheries and Mining Minister Floyd Green highlighted the importance of secure landownership in supporting agricultural investment.
Green said the absence of registered titles can discourage property owners from investing in their land and limit their access to financing.
“When you don’t have the title to prove that you own something, it holds you back. You don’t want to invest as much,” he said.
He explained that the ministry is working with the National Land Agency through its systematic land titling programme to ensure farmers in communities earmarked for the irrigation expansion also receive formal proof of ownership.
The titles are being provided at no cost to beneficiaries.
Minister of State in the ministry, Franklin Witter, congratulated the recipients, describing formal landownership as a significant milestone that can create opportunities for families and future generations.
“For many families, receiving a title is deeply significant. It provides greater certainty about ownership, great opportunities for the future, and great opportunities for investment in the next generation,” Witter said.
He encouraged beneficiaries to make productive use of their properties and take advantage of opportunities offered through the Government’s agricultural development initiatives.
“I hope you see today as the beginning of new possibilities for your family and your property,” he added.
The title presentation formed part of the commissioning of a $54 million solar energy system at the Beacon F2 Pump Station.
