Manchester, Jamaica | August 5, 2025 – McKoy’s News: The Prospect main road in South Manchester turned into a scene of heartbreak Tuesday afternoon as 11-year-old Malique Barnes, a promising student of Bull Savannah Primary, tragically lost his life after being mowed down by a commercial vehicle.
Reports reaching McKoy’s News are that shortly before 4:00 p.m., young Barnes was riding his bicycle when he was struck by the vehicle, sending shockwaves through the quiet rural community.
Family members have since confirmed his identity. Barnes had been attending informal summer lessons hosted by a relative at their home. His family described him as a helpful and hardworking child who often assisted his mother on the farm, even into the night.
According to relatives, the boy was focused, eager to learn, and always willing to lend a hand around the home and community.
The South Manchester police have launched a full investigation into the fatal crash. The driver of the commercial vehicle is currently being questioned by authorities.
As the community mourns the tragic loss, renewed calls are being made for stronger road safety measures, especially along busy rural routes used frequently by children.
