St. James, Jamaica — Construction is now underway on a large temporary medical dome at Cornwall Regional Hospital aimed at expanding patient capacity as recovery and restoration activities continue at the facility.
Health Minister Dr. Christopher Tufton announced during a Saturday press briefing at the Western Regional Health Authority’s technical office that the 10,000-square-foot structure will provide space for up to 100 additional beds. The expansion is intended to reduce congestion and support ongoing healthcare delivery at the hospital.
According to the minister, the dome is being provided through donations from non-governmental organizations Judah 1 and Kennedy International Logistics and Services. The contribution will also include a range of medical equipment, among them diagnostic tools such as X-ray machines.
Officials indicated that the dome is being positioned near the hospital’s Accident and Emergency Department to allow for faster patient access and smoother clinical operations.
Dr. Tufton further reported that Cornwall Regional Hospital has recovered approximately 75 percent of its bed capacity compared to pre-hurricane levels. He noted that patient pressure within the Accident and Emergency unit has recently shown signs of easing as capacity improves.
