Winston Foster OD, better known as Yellowman, is a Jamaican reggae and dancehall deejay who has left an indelible mark on the music industry. A pioneer of the dancehall genre, Yellowman rose to prominence in the 1980s, captivating audiences with his unique style and controversial lyrics.
Born in 1956 or 1959, Yellowman’s early life was marked by adversity. Abandoned by his parents, he grew up in the Maxfield Children’s Home and the Alpha Boys School in Kingston, the latter known for its musical alumni. He faced social ostracism due to his albinism, a condition not widely accepted in Jamaica at the time.
Yellowman’s musical journey began in the late 1970s. He gained widespread recognition after placing second in the 1978 Tastee Talent Contest, a competition he went on to win the following year. He honed his skills performing at outdoor sound-system dances, notably with Aces International, and quickly established himself as a prominent figure in the Jamaican music scene.
In the early 1980s, Yellowman collaborated with producer Henry “Junjo” Lawes, achieving significant success. In 1981, he became the first dancehall artist to be signed to a major American label, Columbia Records. His albums “Mister Yellowman” (1982) and “Zungguzungguguzungguzeng” (1983) solidified his status as a dancehall sensation.
Yellowman’s sexually explicit lyrics, particularly in songs like “Mad Over Me,” drew criticism in the mid-1980s. However, he defended his work, stating, “I never know why they call it slackness. I talk about sex, but it’s just what happens behind closed doors. What I talk is reality.”
The 1980s were Yellowman’s most prolific period, during which he released numerous albums and collaborated with other dancehall artists. He also appeared in the film “Jamaican Dancehall Volcano Hi-power 1983.”
Despite a commercial setback with his 1984 album “King Yellowman,” which incorporated R&B and disco elements, Yellowman rebounded with his classic dancehall style. He achieved success with his 1987 rendition of “Blueberry Hill,” which topped the Jamaican charts.
In the mid-1990s, Yellowman shifted towards socially conscious material, gaining international acclaim alongside artists like Buju Banton. His 1994 album “Prayer” reflected a more religious theme, marking a departure from his earlier “slackness” style.
Yellowman has continued to release music and perform internationally, touring extensively and collaborating with artists like Run-DMC and OPM. He has received two Grammy Award nominations for Best Reggae Album and was awarded the Order of Distinction (Officer Class) by the Jamaican government in 2018.
Beyond his music, Yellowman is known for his resilience and positive outlook. He has spoken out against violence and homophobia and has shared his personal journey of battling skin cancer. He is married to Rosie and is a father, his daughter Kareema following in his musical footsteps.
Yellowman’s influence on dancehall music is undeniable. He is credited with shaping the genre’s modern sound and bringing it to a global audience. His iconic song “Zungguzungguguzungguzeng” has been sampled and imitated by numerous artists, solidifying his legacy as a true pioneer.
