St. James, Jamaica — A man identified as Sheldon Plumber, otherwise called “Damian” or “X,” was shot dead by police in St. James during an operation carried out in the Sign Orange community on Friday afternoon.
Reports from the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) are that about 2:30 p.m., members of the Area One Fugitive Apprehension Team conducted an intelligence-led operation in the area. IInvestigators allege that Plumber was seen standing beneath a tree with a firearm in his hand.
Police claim that upon approaching him, “X” pointed the weapon at the officers, prompting them to take evasive action and open gunfire. When the shooting ended, Plumber was reportedly found suffering from gunshot wounds beside a Browning 9mm pistol fitted with a magazine containing three live rounds.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Following the incident, residents of the community staged a protest by blocking sections of the roadway with stones and debris. Several residents alleged that the killing was unjustified and claimed that Plumber was unarmed at the time of the shooting.
The police later cleared the roadway and restored order in the area.
Law enforcement sources have described Plumber as a major violence producer in the Sign Orange community and alleged that he financed criminal activities through proceeds obtained from lottery scamming operations.
Plumber previously survived a deadly shooting attack at a bingo party in St. James late last year, during which two men were killed and two other persons injured.
The Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) and the Jamaica Constabulary Force are now probing the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
