Wendy Williams’ court-appointed guardianship is under investigation for alleged elder abuse, according to new reports.
Adult Protective Services launched an inquiry last week following claims that Williams’ guardian, Sabrina Morrissey, sent the former talk show host to visit her father in Florida without any money, as reported by the U.S. Sun on Monday.
A source alleged that Williams’ “civil rights and liberty are being denied” and accused Morrissey of mishandling the situation. “The guardian gave her a credit card with no funds when she went to Miami,” the insider claimed. “During her trip to see her father for his birthday, the card was declined, and someone else had to cover her expenses. That’s elder abuse.”
Further accusations have surfaced that Morrissey is using Williams’ wealth for legal fees rather than her well-being. “The guardian is spending all her money hiring lawyers to defend herself and squandering Wendy’s money on legal fees,” the source added.
The allegations come after Williams, 60, was taken from her New York City assisted living home to a hospital last Monday. Reports indicate that she dropped a note to paparazzi from her fifth-story window that simply read, “Help! Wendy!!” A photographer contacted the authorities, leading to a wellness check and subsequent hospitalization.
A psychiatrist at Lenox Hill Hospital later examined Williams and reportedly determined that her “mental capacity is fully intact” after a wellness test.
Williams has been vocal about her discontent with her guardianship arrangement. In a candid January 2024 interview on The Breakfast Club, she described feeling “trapped” in the assisted living facility, surrounded by elderly patients, and cut off from her phone and laptop. She labeled her experience as “emotional abuse.”
“I am not cognitively impaired, but I feel like I am in prison,” she said at the time. “I am definitely isolated. To talk to these people who live here, that is not my cup of tea.”
In 2022, Williams was placed under a court-ordered guardianship after her bank, Wells Fargo, requested a hearing about her well-being. Her team later revealed that she had been diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia and aphasia, conditions that can impair communication and decision-making.
Williams’ family has expressed concerns over the guardianship, stating that they have been “denied contact” with her. In November 2024, Morrissey argued that Williams was “permanently incapacitated” due to her dementia.
With the investigation now underway, questions continue to mount regarding Williams’ guardianship and her financial and personal autonomy. Authorities are expected to review the case thoroughly as Williams’ supporters and loved ones push for transparency and justice.
