Kingston, Jamaica— Entertainer Vybz Kartel and his co-accused were set free Wednesday after the Court of Appeal ruled against retrying them for the murder of Clive “Lizard” Williams.
The judgment was handed down a short while ago by a three-judge panel comprising Justices Marva McDonald-Bishop, Paulette Williams, and David Fraser. Vybz Kartel, whose real name is Adidja Palmer, along with Shawn ‘Shawn Storm’ Campbell, Kahira Jones, and Andre St John, were initially convicted for the September 2011 murder of Williams. Their appeal to the local Court of Appeal in 2020 was unsuccessful, and the convictions were upheld.
However, the case took a significant turn when the accused’s appeal was taken to the United Kingdom-based Privy Council. On March 14, 2024, the Privy Council overturned the murder convictions on the grounds of juror misconduct and remitted the case back to the Jamaica Court of Appeal to decide on the possibility of a retrial.
Following today’s ruling, the Court of Appeal decided against a retrial, effectively setting the men free after more than a decade of legal battles.
The case has drawn significant public and media attention over the years, not only because of Vybz Kartel’s status as a prominent entertainer but also due to the legal intricacies and allegations of juror misconduct.
