Punta Cana, Dominican Republic – Authorities in the Dominican Republic are searching for 20-year-old Sudiksha Konanki, a University of Pittsburgh student who went missing while walking on a beach.
Konanki, a Virginia native and Indian citizen, was last seen in Punta Cana, where she had been traveling with five female friends. According to Dominican police sources, the group was accompanied by two American men. The others returned to their hotel, leaving Konanki on the beach with one of the men. She has not been seen since.
The Dominican Civil Defense and other agencies have been combing the area, using helicopters and conducting ground searches along the shoreline in an effort to locate her. No arrests have been made, and the investigation remains ongoing.
Officials from the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office in Virginia confirmed that multiple University of Pittsburgh students were traveling together, including at least two from their county. They also stated that the Indian Embassy in the Dominican Republic is working alongside the U.S. State Department and other law enforcement agencies in the search effort.
News of Konanki’s disappearance has quickly spread through social media, with many students at the University of Pittsburgh expressing shock and concern.
“It’s circulating through Instagram, Facebook, Twitter,” said one student who spoke to KDKA-TV. “It just makes you wonder… it’s scary.”
A fellow Pitt student who had been in the Dominican Republic said that limited internet access left many unaware of the situation until they returned to the U.S.
“As soon as we landed in Fort Lauderdale, that was whenever we saw everybody posting that a girl had gone missing,” she recalled.
For now, friends, family, and authorities continue to hope for Konanki’s safe return. Officials urge anyone with information to come forward as search efforts intensify.
