YALLAHS, St Thomas — A local videographer is now in police custody following the seizure of three imitation firearms during a predawn raid at his residence in Yallahs on Monday morning.
The operation was part of a series of coordinated raids across St Thomas that also led to the discovery of a total of four homemade firearms, including an imitation shotgun and an illegal .38 revolver recovered during a separate search in Wheelersfield.
In the Wheelersfield raid, two brothers were taken into custody. All three men remain under police investigation, and formal charges are pending.
A senior detective attached to the investigation told The Gleaner that imitation firearms — though not capable of firing real bullets — are taken seriously under Jamaica’s new Firearms Act.
“The police are reminding the public that imitation firearms, though not real, can be used to threaten or commit crimes and are treated seriously under the new firearms act,” the officer explained.
When asked whether the seized items found at the videographer’s home could have been props for production purposes, the officer clarified that special clearance is required.
“Under the law, there has to be a special permit granted, and also, even if that is so, you must also have a registered business,” the detective said.
“At this point, he doesn’t seem to have met either of those.”
The raids form part of a broader clampdown on illegal weapons and criminal networks operating within the eastern parish.
Police are urging anyone with information on illegal firearms or suspicious activities to contact them or make reports anonymously through Crime Stop.
