Veteran Business Journalist Owen James Passes, Leaving an Enduring Legacy

KINGSTON – The Press Association of Jamaica (PAJ) has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of veteran journalist Owen James, a pioneering force in business journalism whose career spanned nearly five decades. James is remembered as a trailblazer who transformed the local media landscape through his dedication to quality reporting and mentorship of future generations.

James began his illustrious career at the Gleaner Company, eventually rising to become editor of The Star, where he played a pivotal role in shaping journalism in Jamaica. In the early 1980s, while serving at the Jamaica Broadcasting Corporation (JBC), he was instrumental in nurturing a generation of journalists who have since made significant contributions to the industry.

Recognizing a pressing need for a greater focus on business news, James pioneered a series of groundbreaking programmes on Television Jamaica and CVM Television. His initiatives included acclaimed shows such as A Ray of Hope, The Business Day, The Business Review, and On a Personal Note. His later project, The Owen James Report, further cemented his reputation as a leader in financial journalism, offering in-depth analysis and insights that resonated with audiences across the nation.

PAJ President Dashan Hendricks extended heartfelt condolences to James’ family, friends, and colleagues, describing him as an innovative mentor and staunch advocate for quality journalism. “Owen James was not only a respected journalist but also a guiding light for countless media professionals. His legacy will continue to inspire future generations of reporters and editors,” Hendricks said.
