Vaz Granted Bail After Assault Complaint Filed in Savanna-la-Mar

People’s National Party (PNP) Member of Parliament for Westmoreland Central, Dwayne Vaz, and his driver have been charged in connection with an alleged assault reported in Savanna-la-Mar on Sunday.

Vaz has denied taking part in any physical attack. In a statement issued through the opposition party on Wednesday, he maintained that he did not assault anyone.

According to Vaz, he reported to the Savanna-la-Mar Police Station after social media posts alleged that he was involved in an altercation that resulted in a man being assaulted. He said that upon arrival at the station, he was informed by a police constable that a complaint had been filed alleging assault occasioning actual bodily harm. He was subsequently granted bail on his own recognisance in keeping with police procedures.

The Member of Parliament explained that he had been attending an event at New Market Oval with colleagues when a disturbance occurred nearby. He stated that he observed two men on the ground engaged in what appeared to be a fight — one of whom was his driver, and the other the complainant.

Vaz said he, along with others present, intervened and separated the individuals involved. He further indicated that the complainant, whom he described as someone known to him, left the venue on a bicycle following the incident. According to Vaz, his driver later sought medical attention and obtained a medical report.

He confirmed that both the complainant and his driver have since been charged in relation to the matter.

Vaz reiterated that he is innocent of the allegations and stated that he has made himself available to assist law enforcement as investigations continue.
