30-year-old Erena Washington, a sales associate from Washington DC, United States, was convicted during her appearance at the St James Parish Court on Thursday.
Washington was apprehended at the Sangster International Airport on Monday, December 4, 2023, while trying to board a trip to New York, carrying 2.3 kilograms of cocaine. Reports indicate that the illegal substance, valued at more than J$11 million, was discovered hidden on her person during security screenings.
She faced charges of possession of cocaine, dealing in cocaine, attempting to export cocaine, and conspiracy to export cocaine.
In court, Washington pleaded guilty and was fined J$400,000 or sentenced to 6 months imprisonment for possession of cocaine, and J$300,000 or 6 months imprisonment for attempting to export cocaine.
Additionally, Washington received a mandatory 6-month imprisonment term in addition to the fines.
