MONTEGO BAY, St James — A 48-year-old American firefighter is in police custody after airport security allegedly found a disassembled pistol and ammunition hidden in his checked luggage at Sangster International Airport on Sunday afternoon.
Police have identified the accused as Roland Douglas II, of Guntersville, Alabama. Reports are that about 12:45 p.m., Douglas was preparing to depart the island when security personnel spotted an anomaly during routine screening.
A search of his bag, conducted in his presence, reportedly revealed a silver-and-black Sig Sauer .380 pistol, two magazines, and 13 rounds of ammunition.
Douglas was immediately arrested and later charged with possession of a prohibited weapon and unauthorized possession of ammunition. Investigators say arrangements are being made for him to appear in court.
The police are reminding visitors that Jamaica has strict firearms laws, and anyone found with unlicensed weapons or ammunition faces heavy fines and possible imprisonment.
