Jamaica has received a significant donation of medical equipment and supplies valued at more than US$14,000 from the United States government, marking a crucial aid initiative following the impact of Hurricane Beryl. The items, including 12 Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) machines, 25 nebulisers, hospital beds, syringes, and hygiene supplies, were delivered via the USNS Burlington at Kingston Wharves on Wednesday, July 10.
Dr. Nicole Dawkins-Wright, Director of Emergency, Disaster Management, and Special Services at the Ministry of Health and Wellness, emphasized the invaluable support these supplies bring, particularly in assisting patients with respiratory challenges using CPAP machines. She highlighted the enduring partnership between Jamaica and the US in bolstering public health efforts.
US Ambassador to Jamaica, Nick Perry, underscored the broader humanitarian assistance provided by the US, totaling U$$2.5 million, which encompasses aid for home repairs, water and sanitation provisions, and logistical support. The USNS Burlington’s presence is part of the Continuing Promise 2024 mission by the US Naval Forces Southern Command, aimed at fostering regional goodwill and enhancing partnerships.
Lieutenant Commander Zachary Smith, Mission Commander, emphasized Jamaica’s pivotal role in the Continuing Promise mission, highlighting collaborative efforts between US Navy and Jamaica Defence Force personnel in medical care, training exercises, and disaster response initiatives. This marks the 14th iteration of the mission, reinforcing Jamaica’s significance as a key partner in regional humanitarian efforts.
