US Coast Guard intercepts Cuba-bound fuel ship

US Coast Guard Intercepts Ship Allegedly Carrying Fuel to Cuba

The United States Coast Guard says it intercepted a cargo vessel allegedly transporting illicit fuel to Cuba during an operation in the Caribbean Sea.

The operation, announced on October 2, involved the boarding of the M/V Grace in early September. Authorities said the ship was suspected of using deceptive practices associated with the so-called “dark fleet”.

Following the boarding, the vessel was escorted to Progreso, Mexico. A Mexican Navy inspection found large quantities of fuel in its ballast tanks, while several containers were also believed to hold illicit fuel.

The Coast Guard said the storage arrangements posed a pollution risk to Caribbean waters and coastal communities. The operation follows the earlier interception of another vessel, the M/V Jaira Provider, which authorities also accused of transporting illicit fuel to Cuba.

The amount of fuel aboard the Grace was not disclosed
