SPANISH TOWN, St Catherine — Gun violence claimed two lives along March Pen Road, Spanish Town, on Christmas Day, despite an increased police presence in the area.
The victims have been identified as 30-year-old bar operator Shaniel Myers and 28-year-old Shamar Hall, both residents of March Pen Road.
Reports indicate that shortly after 6:00 p.m., Myers and Hall were among a group of people at a premises along March Pen Road when several armed men entered the area and opened fire. Hall reportedly collapsed at the scene after being shot, while Myers attempted to escape and ran to a nearby churchyard, where she later fell.
Both individuals were transported to hospital, where they were pronounced dead.
Unconfirmed reports suggest that hours after the double killing, police on patrol intercepted a group of armed men, leading to a shootout. One of the men was reportedly fatally shot by the police. His identity has not yet been established.
The March Pen Road community has remained tense following the fatal shooting of an alleged area leader earlier this year. Since that incident, the area has experienced several violent episodes, with at least three people reportedly killed amid gang-related conflicts.
Investigations into the Christmas Day killings are ongoing.
