Two Policemen Charged with Murder in Fatal East Kingston Shooting

Two policemen have been formally charged with murder and several other offences following the fatal shooting of three men in East Kingston last Sunday.

Mark Roye and Constable Kelby White, who have been in custody since last week, were charged on Sunday.

The charges include three counts of murder, using a firearm in the commission of a felony, discharging a firearm within 40 yards of a public thoroughfare, placing an item on the scene of a crime, and willfully lying to the commissioner of police.

The incident, which occurred around 2:30 a.m. along Windward Road, was initially reported by the officers as a shootout with suspected members of a robbery ring. The police claimed that gunfire was exchanged, resulting in the deaths of three men and the recovery of two illegal firearms. One officer reportedly sustained a non-life-threatening injury during the encounter.

The actions of Roye and White were investigated by the Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM), leading to the charges. The investigation revealed discrepancies in the initial reports provided by the officers, prompting further scrutiny into the circumstances surrounding the deaths.

The charges of tampering with the crime scene and providing false statements underscore concerns raised about the integrity of the officers’ account of the incident

The incident and subsequent charges have sparked significant public interest, with calls for accountability and transparency. Some residents have questioned the initial claims of a shootout, while others have urged for justice for the three men who lost their lives.

Corporal Roye and Constable White are expected to appear in court soon as the case proceeds. INDECOM has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring a thorough investigation into the matter.

The fatal shooting has reignited debates about police conduct and the need for strengthened oversight within the Jamaica Constabulary Force, with many watching closely as the legal process unfolds.
