Kingston, Jamaica – Patrick Branford and Nane Banton, charged in connection with the seizure of nearly 2,000 pounds of compressed ganja, were each granted $1 million bail by Parish Judge Maxine Ellis in the Kingston and St Andrew Parish Court on Wednesday.
The men, facing charges under the Dangerous Drugs Act, were ordered to surrender travel documents, report regularly to the police, and comply with strict stop orders. The third accused, Leon Hines, had his bail application adjourned to September 19.
The trio was arrested following an operation by the Firearms and Narcotics Investigation Division on Spanish Town Road, Kingston 11, on August 15. Branford and Banton were intercepted in a Toyota Hiace bus containing several knitted bags reportedly filled with ganja. Hines was driving them to Norman Manley International Airport at the time of the arrest.
During the hearing, the prosecutor opposed bail, citing the gravity of the offences and noting that some accused had provided caution statements admitting involvement in the trafficking operation.
Branford and Banton are expected to reappear in court on September 19. Attorneys Kemar Robinson and Pierre Rodgers represented Branford and Banton respectively, while Donovan Collins appeared for Hines.
