ST. JAMES — A joint police-military operation in the Brown’s Lane community of Granville ended with two armed men fatally shot and a high-powered rifle taken off the streets following a late-night confrontation with security forces.
The incident occurred shortly after midnight on Thursday, January 1, 2025, when members of the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF), supported by the military, responded to intelligence suggesting illegal gunfire was taking place in the area despite repeated public warnings against celebratory gun salutes.
According to preliminary reports, security personnel moved into the community after receiving information about explosions and gunshots. Investigators believe a group had assembled and was in possession of prohibited firearms, allegedly to carry out unlawful celebratory shooting.
Upon entering the area, the joint team reportedly came under gunfire from armed individuals. Officers responded in line with their training amid what was described as an immediate threat. After the exchange subsided, two men were discovered suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. They were transported to hospital, where they were pronounced dead.
Tragically, a four-year-old child was also struck during the incident and later died while undergoing medical treatment. A 68-year-old woman sustained injuries and received care. The JCF expressed condolences to the child’s family and noted its deep concern for all civilians affected by the violence.
Authorities have launched full investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident, including reviews by the appropriate oversight bodies. Efforts are ongoing to formally identify the two deceased men, while intelligence-driven inquiries continue.
In the days leading up to the New Year, the JCF and the Firearm Licensing Authority had issued multiple advisories cautioning against the use of illegal weapons and the dangers associated with celebratory gunfire. Officials have repeatedly emphasized that such actions place innocent lives at serious risk, particularly children and the elderly.
The police have again urged residents to reject gun salutes and to assist law enforcement by sharing information related to illegal firearms and criminal activity.
A heightened police presence remains in effect across the wider Granville area as part of efforts to maintain order, calm residents, and prevent further incidents. The JCF says it remains focused on safeguarding lives and ensuring that those involved in criminal acts are brought before the courts.
