ST CATHERINE, Jamaica – Two adults have been arrested following a significant fraud operation in Portmore, St Catherine, on Tuesday. The suspects are expected to face charges under the Proceeds of Crime Act and the Firearms Act.
The operation, which took place between 5:00 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. at a residence on St Vincent Boulevard in Caribbean Estate, was intelligence-driven. Authorities recovered approximately J$50 million, along with undisclosed amounts of US dollars and British pounds. In addition to the cash, four high-end vehicles and two firearms were seized.
The Counter-Terrorism and Organised Crime Division, headed by Acting Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Anthony McLaughlin, had been monitoring the suspects for some time. McLaughlin confirmed that the investigation had been thorough and ongoing for several months.
He also highlighted a concerning link between lottery scammers and the rise in illegal firearms, noting that individuals involved in fraudulent activities are increasingly armed and dangerous. McLaughlin indicated that the investigation might involve further collaboration with the Financial Investigations Division (FID), the Major Organised Crime and Anti-Corruption Agency (MOCA), and the United States Embassy.
The investigation is ongoing, and additional charges may follow as authorities continue their efforts to combat fraud and organized crime.
