St James, Jamaica – The St James police have successfully apprehended Jermaine McKenzie, also known as “Gio,” the most wanted man in the division. McKenzie was taken into custody on Sunday evening during a targeted operation at Harvey Beach along the Rose Hall main road.
McKenzie has been at the top of the St James police’s most wanted list due to his alleged involvement in multiple murders and shootings, particularly in the Flower Hill and Flanker communities. His arrest marks a significant victory for law enforcement in the ongoing battle against violent crime in the area.
According to Superintendent Eron Samuels, head of the St James police, the operation also led to the recovery of a Glock pistol from McKenzie. This seizure adds to the growing number of firearms confiscated in recent weeks, further crippling the firepower of criminal elements within the division.
In a related development, the police reported the seizure of two high-powered rifles on Monday, including a brand-new Smith & Wesson AR-15 rifle. The weapons were confiscated during an Operation Storm exercise in Gordon Crescent. Alongside the rifles, officers also seized 22 rounds of 5.7mm ammunition, 19 of which were tracer rounds, aiding in projectile accuracy.
Superintendent Samuels emphasized the significance of these recent successes, noting that the St James division has now seized a total of 72 weapons since the start of the year. “This is a major success for the St James division, bringing to 72 the number of weapons seized since the start of the year. We have seized ten rifles out of this 72, and six weapons seized over the last two weeks,” he stated.
The Superintendent also highlighted a notable decrease in homicides, with 43 fewer murders recorded this year—a 33 percent reduction since January. “We are very happy with the successes of the Division. The men and women of the division are working very hard to ensure the safety and security of persons within the division,” Samuels added.
The arrest of McKenzie and the continued efforts to remove illegal firearms from the streets are seen as critical steps towards restoring peace and safety in the St James communities.
