Police have taken three men into custody following the discovery of a firearm during a vehicle search along Municipal Boulevard in Portmore, St Catherine, early Tuesday morning.
Law enforcement officials reported that shortly after 1:40 a.m., members of the St Catherine South Police Division were conducting routine patrols in the vicinity of the Jamaica Urban Transit Company (JUTC) depot when they became suspicious of a grey Toyota Fielder traveling with three male occupants.
The vehicle was intercepted and searched by the officers. During the operation, a .45-calibre pistol was reportedly found inside the car. The firearm was fitted with a magazine containing five rounds of ammunition.
All three men were subsequently detained on suspicion of illegal possession of a prohibited weapon and unauthorised possession of ammunition.
Investigations into the incident are now being led by the Portmore Criminal Investigation Branch as police continue efforts to determine the circumstances surrounding the firearm’s presence in the vehicle.
