Kishane Thompson clinched a silver medal in the men’s 100m final at the Stade de France in Paris on Sunday, clocking an impressive 9.79 seconds (1.0 m/s), identical to the time posted by winner Noah Lyles of the USA. Thompson’s silver marks the third medal for Jamaica at these Olympics, following Shaneika Ricketts’ silver in the triple jump and Rajindra Campbell’s bronze in the shot put on Saturday.
Thompson’s achievement is particularly significant as it represents the first medal for a Jamaican man in any major global championship since Usain Bolt’s bronze at the 2017 World Championships. Competing in only his eighth race of the season, the 23-year-old displayed remarkable composure to secure his first medal at any level in just his second major final.
In a race that saw Oblique Seville, who had excelled in the semi-finals, finishing eighth with a time of 9.91 seconds, Thompson’s performance stood out. Despite being held at the start line longer than usual, he managed to stay focused and was narrowly edged out by Lyles at the finish, the two sprinters separated by merely a thousandth of a second.
Jamaica’s strong showing at the Olympics underscores the nation’s continued prowess in track and field, adding to the legacy of past champions and setting the stage for future successes.
