Kingston, Jamaica (McKoy’s News) – It was pure celebration and cultural pride at the 63rd Independence Grand Gala as living legend Leroy Sibbles was presented with the prestigious Reggae Icon Award by Prime Minister Andrew Holness, in front of a roaring crowd at the National Stadium.
The moment was electric as the “Get In The Groove” singer stepped forward to accept the national honour, his face lit with joy and gratitude. In a touching and heartfelt moment, Sibbles pointed to the audience and declared,
“This one is for you!”

The award recognises Sibbles’ decades-long contribution to reggae music—both as a member of the legendary Heptones and as a solo artist, vocalist, bassist, and producer who helped shape the sound of reggae from Studio One to global stages.
Three Kings of Reggae Honoured
Sibbles joins fellow reggae heavyweights Capleton and Beres Hammond, who were also honoured with Reggae Icon Awards during the dazzling Gala celebration. The trio represents the past, present, and future of reggae, with each bringing their unique sound and legacy to the cultural fabric of Jamaica.
The National Stadium exploded with applause as fans, dignitaries, and fellow artists paid tribute to the icons, marking a high point in an already unforgettable Independence night.
Cultural Celebration at its Peak
The Grand Gala, known for its vibrant display of Jamaican heritage, featured over 2,500 performers, fireworks, drone displays, and musical tributes—culminating in a moving salute to the reggae greats who continue to inspire generations.
As the lights dimmed and the music swelled, Leroy Sibbles stood tall—a true king of reggae, honoured not just by his government, but by the people whose hearts his music has touched for decades.
