ST MARY, Jamaica – Tensions remain high in Iterboreale, St Mary, following the fatal shooting of 28-year-old Kevin Cunnigham by police at a candlelight vigil on Friday. The incident has sparked outrage among residents, leading to threats of demonstrations and roadblocks.
According to Acting Superintendent of Police in charge of the parish, Anthony Wallace, law enforcement has been on high alert due to the potential for civil unrest. He stated that the authorities are taking precautionary measures to ensure public safety and prevent further destabilization in the community.
The police have reported that Cunnigham brandished a firearm at an officer, who then responded by discharging his weapon, fatally shooting him. However, residents dispute this claim, insisting that Cunnigham was killed in cold blood. They are calling for an independent investigation into the incident.
The Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) has launched a probe into the matter, as concerns over police conduct continue to grow. Community members are urging transparency in the investigation and are demanding justice for Cunnigham.
The situation remains tense as both law enforcement and residents await further developments in the case.
