St Catherine, Jamaica: A 16-year-old complainant who admitted in court that she falsely accused a man of sexually assaulting her three years ago has been taken into custody on suspicion of creating public mischief.
The matter was heard before Justice Dale Palmer in the St Catherine Circuit Court on Thursday. While on the witness stand, the teenager stated that she had no interest in the matter and confessed that she made the report because she had feelings for the man, which he did not reciprocate.
Following her admission, Justice Palmer freed the accused and asked the Crown Counsel whether there was an interest in pursuing charges against the complainant. The teenager was subsequently taken into custody.
The accused, who had been facing allegations dating back to 2022, maintained his innocence throughout numerous court appearances. Investigations by the Centre for the Investigation of Sexual Offences and Child Abuse (CISOCA) had led to 10 charges, including sexual intercourse with a person under 16, sexual grooming, and production of child pornography.
He was represented in court by attorneys-at-law Shelldon Campbell and Earl Hamilton
