A taxi operator has been formally charged following a deadly motor vehicle collision in Spanish Town, St Catherine, which resulted in the death of a 54-year-old woman on Saturday afternoon.
The deceased, Janet Wilson of Jobs Lane, Spanish Town, succumbed to injuries sustained during the incident along Young Street.
Reports indicate that shortly after 3:00 p.m., Wilson was walking with another female pedestrian when both were struck by a 2019 AD Wagon allegedly being driven at high speed by Shelton Johnson.
The force of the collision reportedly propelled Wilson over 12 metres, carrying her through an ackee tree, a zinc fence, and onto nearby property. The vehicle eventually stopped after crashing into a concrete wall and another motor car, identified as a Mazda Premacy.
Emergency responders transported Wilson and several other injured individuals, including occupants of the vehicle, to the Spanish Town Hospital. She was later pronounced dead, while the others were treated for various injuries.
Johnson was initially taken into custody on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. Following a question-and-answer session, he was officially charged on Monday.
He is expected to appear before the St Catherine Parish Court on Friday.
