Suspect In Brutal Subway Beating Of 78-Year-Old Woman Arrested, Charged With Assault

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – The suspect behind a vicious attack against a 78-year-old woman on the subway is in custody, NYPD officials said Saturday.

It happened around 3:10 a.m. on March 10 aboard a northbound 2 train as it pulled into the 238th Street / Nereid Avenue station in the Bronx.

The NYPD released surveillance photos and video of the suspect Friday. The man in that heinous attack has now been identified as 36-year-old Marc Gomez of Yonkers.

Police said he repeatedly punched and kicked the victim in the head and body as 2 train riders stood by and watched the crime unfold. Gomez has now been charged with second and third-degree assault and harassment.

The victim was treated at the 241st Street station for cuts and swelling to her face.

Authorities say the 36-year-old had been apprehended Saturday afternoon and was in custody. They did not immediately release any information on how they were able to track down suspect.

Sources tell CBS2 that the 78-year-old victim is a homeless woman who did not know Gomez before the unprovoked attack. She was reportedly treated and released is now getting help from city officials, NYPD Chief of Detectives Dermot Shea wrote on Twitter.

“Thank you to the worldwide community for the tremendous assistance,” Shea added.
