St Catherine, Jamaica – A man who pleaded guilty to evading a toll fee and stealing a tag from a plaza booth has been slapped with fines totaling more than $100,000 by the St Catherine Parish Court.
The accused, Dwaine Williamson, driver of a Toyota Probox, was fined:
-
$10,000 or five days for toll evasion
-
$4,000 or three days for possession of an offensive weapon
-
$100,000 or 30 days for simple larceny
The sentence was handed down on Tuesday by Acting Senior Parish Court Judge Janelle Nelson-Gayle.
Williamson was unrepresented in court.
According to police reports, on June 5, a lawman traveling along the highway near Caymanas saw Williamson’s vehicle bypass the toll without payment. He then reportedly stopped, stole a toll tag, and sped off.
A nearby checkpoint was alerted, and Williamson was intercepted shortly after. Police say they recovered the stolen toll tag and found a machete under the driver’s seat.
He was taken into custody and later charged with simple larceny, toll evasion, and possession of an offensive weapon.
Investigations are ongoing.
