Spicy Hill Celebrates New Water Supply as $35 Million Pipeline Project Comes to Completion

Trelawny, Jamaica: The National Water Commission (NWC) has successfully completed the $35 million Spicy Hill Pipeline Project, bringing improved water access to approximately 1,152 residents in the growing rural community.

Minister without Portfolio, Matthew Samuda, officially commissioned the project on Tuesday, December 17th. The new infrastructure will not only regularize water supply but also reduce water loss and enhance operational efficiency.

“This is a momentous occasion for Spicy Hill as it brings us closer to our goal of providing potable water to all Jamaicans by 2030,” said Minister Samuda. He commended the NWC team for completing the project on time and under budget.

To encourage residents to connect to the NWC system, the government is offering a 50% discount on the first bill. Additionally, a 90-day amnesty period will be implemented in January to allow residents with outstanding bills to settle their accounts without penalties.

The new pipeline spans 2.5 kilometers and includes a mix of galvanized and PVC pipes.

Local resident Sheree Morrison-Clarke expressed gratitude for the improved water service, stating, “It is truly a great initiative because I know water is life and we can’t do anything without water. So, the fact that we are getting this precious commodity, we are truly grateful.”
