Kingston, Jamaica — A member of the Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) was fatally shot during a confrontation with armed men in the Charles Street and Chestnut Lane area of Kingston early Friday morning.
The tragic incident occurred around 1:25 a.m. while soldiers were conducting routine foot patrol duties in the area. According to reports, the soldiers observed a group of suspicious men on foot and decided to approach them. However, as the soldiers closed in, the men reportedly opened fire, prompting the soldiers to take evasive action and return fire.
When the exchange of gunfire ended, one of the soldiers was found with a gunshot wound to the left side of his face. His fellow soldiers immediately rushed him to the Kingston Public Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The gunmen involved in the shooting managed to escape on foot and remain at large as of the latest reports.
The Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) and scenes of crime personnel were quickly dispatched to the scene to conduct a thorough investigation. Authorities are working to piece together the events leading up to the deadly encounter and are appealing to the public for any information that could assist in apprehending the suspects.
