“Renowned Pediatric Neurosurgeon of South Florida attended 17th Annual Caribbean Neurosciences Congress”

Miami, Florida (February 11th, 2019) – The Caribbean Neurological Association in conjunction with the Department of Surgery, Radiology, Anesthesia and Intensive Care, University Hospital of the West Indies invited the renowned Pediatric Neurosurgeon Dr. Dean Hertzler, to the 17th Annual Caribbean Neurosciences Congress and Symposium (CANS) at the Montego Bay Convention Centre Jamaica.

This important symposium is committed to provide, as every year, the latest updates in the medical field, bringing together a large group of physicians and specialist from all over the world to share their knowledge with colleagues and residents in training. This year, the CANS most important topics were: infections, inflammatory conditions, cancer, trauma, vascular diseases, oncology, spine and critical care.

Dr. Dean Hertzler, Pediatric Neurosurgeon, was representing the South Florida Institution Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital, part of Memorial Healthcare System. During his presentation in the symposium, Dr. Hertzler will talk about neurosurgical management of cerebral palsy and spasticity.

Cerebral palsy and spasticity affect muscle movement and control, and there are different types of it, being the spastic CP the most common one. Kids with cerebral palsy and spasticity have stiffy muscles either in the upper part or lower part of the body and, the sad part of the story is that this condition is for life.

According to Dr. Hertzler, this condition is a significant cause of morbidity in children, because the increased rigidity of the muscles gradually compromises the function of their little bodies, and it gets even harder to take care of them with time.  Dr. Hertzler’s presentation reviewed the medical management of spasticity as well as detailed surgical treatments; he also discussed the placement of intrathecal baclofen pumps as the technique and patient selection for palliative and functional selective dorsal rhizotomy.

“As physicians, our focus is on the long-term health, well-being and healing of our patients. We are very fortunate to have an experienced group of experts who gather often in search of ways of innovating treatments while delivering compassionate care to our patients throughout every step of the way”, stated Dr. Hertzler.
