Kingston, Jamaica – The Rural Agricultural Development Authority (RADA) is advising farmers to take proactive steps to assess and protect their crops during periods of heavy rainfall, which can create conditions favorable for crop diseases and pest infestations.
Senior Plant Health and Food Safety Officer at RADA, Francine Webb, emphasized the importance of conducting field inspections as soon as it is safe to do so after significant rainfall. “When assessing your field, you’re looking for signs of disease, pest infestation, and physical damage. Look for symptoms such as leaf spots, wilting, or root rot to better understand the impact on your crops,” Webb explained.
In addition to inspecting crops, Webb recommended that farmers prioritize improving drainage in their fields. Clearing drains and trenches before heavy rains is essential to prevent waterlogging and allow the soil to dry more quickly. “For areas prone to flooding, consider contouring or adding drainage channels to manage water flow and reduce the accumulation of water,” she advised.
Farmers are also encouraged to obtain appropriate treatments, including fungicides, to aid recovery after rainfall. Webb highlighted the significance of applying preventative sprays, such as copper-based fungicides, to protect plants from diseases like anthracnose and downy mildew. “Fungicides can help protect your crops before symptoms appear, especially with the increased rainfall,” she said.
The RADA officer also reminded farmers that heavy rainfall can lead to an uptick in bacterial and fungal infections, which can severely damage crops if left untreated.
