Venice, Italy – Amazon founder and multi-billionaire Jeff Bezos arrived in Venice on Wednesday with fiancée Lauren Sánchez for their highly anticipated wedding — but not everyone is celebrating.
The couple’s arrival by water taxi at the five-star Aman Hotel, guarded by security boats, marked the beginning of what has become one of the year’s most controversial social events.
While Venice is no stranger to celebrity nuptials, the “No Space for Bezos” protest movement — backed by local activists, students, housing advocates and Greenpeace — is making it clear that this wedding symbolizes far more than romance.
Activists have been staging demonstrations across the lagoon city, criticizing wealth inequality, mass tourism, and privatization of public space. On Wednesday, a striking stunt featured a mannequin of Bezos clinging to an Amazon box floating down the Grand Canal, fists full of fake money.
Another group unfurled anti-billionaire banners in St Mark’s Square, while plans are underway for a Saturday protest march, originally meant to block canals with boats. Organisers claim that public pressure forced a venue change to the Arsenale, a more secure location outside the historic centre.
Prominent activist Tommaso Cacciari accused Bezos of “contributing to global obscurantism,” pointing to Amazon’s labour record, political ties, and tax disputes.
Despite the backlash, Venice Mayor Luigi Brugnaro called the event an honour and denied any disruptions. Meanwhile, research association Corila confirmed receiving a major donation from Bezos’ Earth Fund to support environmental work in the Venetian lagoon.
Among the 200 expected guests are Oprah Winfrey, Leonardo DiCaprio, Mick Jagger, Ivanka Trump, and Katy Perry.
