Promising Young Farmer and Youth Awardee Ceejay Cunningham Fatally Shot in Manchester

Ceejay Cunningham, the recipient of the 2022 Prime Minister’s Youth Award for Agriculture, was tragically shot and killed in Davyton, Manchester on Friday, according to reports.

Cunningham, aged 29, was hailed as an uplifting figure in the communities of Chantilly and Davyton, according to Mario Mitchell, the Councillor for the Bellefield Division.

Mitchell expressed profound shock and dismay over Cunningham’s untimely demise, highlighting his significant contributions to agriculture and the community at large. He described Cunningham as a promising young farmer who had recently received recognition with the Prime Minister’s Youth Award for Agriculture. Mitchell further emphasized Cunningham’s dedication and success in agriculture, particularly in ventures such as strawberry farming and other crop cultivation.

Preliminary reports indicate that Cunningham was gunned down on Friday evening in a section of Davyton. Mitchell, along with other members of the community, expressed bewilderment and disbelief at the senseless act.

Mitchell lamented the loss of such a hardworking, dedicated, and positive role model in the community. He expressed a strong determination to unravel the motives behind Cunningham’s tragic death, stressing the need to address and understand the underlying circumstances.

Reflecting on Cunningham’s passion for farming, Mitchell referenced a February 2023 article in the Jamaica Observer where Cunningham shared his early exposure to agriculture, dating back to the age of 11, when he began planting corn, sugar cane, and mint.

As investigations continue into this heartbreaking incident, the community mourns the loss of a beloved figure whose dedication to agriculture and community upliftment will be sorely missed.
