Island-Wide Curfew: Prime Minister Andrew Holness has declared Jamaica a disaster area as a powerful storm approaches.
This declaration, made under section 26 of the Disaster Risk Management Act, will last for seven days.
An island-wide curfew will be enforced from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., starting tomorrow, July 3, 2024, to ensure public safety and deter criminal activity during the storm.
Evacuation orders are in place for flood- and landslide-prone areas, regions at or below sea level, and locations near gullies or waterways. Residents in these areas are urged to evacuate to shelters or higher ground.
“We urge all Jamaicans to comply with evacuation notices,” said Prime Minister Holness. “Even if you haven’t received a notice, if you live in a low-lying area or near a river or gully, evacuate to safer ground.”
The government has mobilized resources and prepared shelters, and emergency services are on high alert. Residents should stock up on supplies, secure their homes, and assist vulnerable neighbors.
