WASHINGTON, D.C. — On Wednesday, President Donald Trump signed an executive order prohibiting transgender athletes from participating in women’s sports, marking his latest action concerning transgender individuals since his return to office.
“With this executive order, the war on women’s sports is over,” President Trump declared during the signing ceremony at the White House, surrounded by children and female athletes. Prominent Republicans, including House Speaker Mike Johnson and Congresswoman Marjorie Green, attended the event.
“We will defend the proud tradition of female athletes, and we will not allow men to beat up, injure, and cheat our women and our girls. From now on, women’s sports will be only for women,” Trump added, receiving applause from the audience.
The executive order empowers government agencies to withhold federal funds from educational institutions that permit transgender athletes to compete on women’s teams. It states: “It is the policy of the United States to rescind all funds from educational programs that deprive women and girls of fair athletic opportunities, which results in the endangerment, humiliation, and silencing of women and girls and deprives them of privacy.”
Additionally, President Trump announced plans to urge the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to revise its policies on transgender athletes ahead of the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. He instructed Secretary of State Marco Rubio to “make it clear” to the IOC that the U.S. seeks changes regarding this issue. Furthermore, Trump directed Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem to deny visa applications from individuals “attempting to fraudulently enter the United States while identifying themselves as women athletes to try and get into the Games.”
Since his second inauguration on January 20, President Trump has issued several orders affecting transgender individuals. These include directives to remove “transgender ideology” from the military, effectively banning transgender troops, and restricting gender transition procedures for individuals under 19.
These actions have intensified debates over transgender rights in the U.S., with supporters arguing for the protection of women’s sports and opponents expressing concerns over discrimination against transgender individuals.
