Law enforcement authorities have announced a series of security restrictions and traffic adjustments ahead of this week’s ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys and Girls’ Athletics Championships at the National Stadium in St Andrew.
Officials say a strict list of prohibited items will be enforced at the venue. Patrons will not be allowed to enter with weapons or weapon-like objects, including firearms, knives, machetes, and ice picks. Other banned items include firecrackers, aerosol sprays, large coolers, glass bottles, lighters, frozen beverages, illegal drugs, alcohol, and pointed umbrellas.
Licensed firearm holders are being urged to make alternative arrangements for securing their weapons, as no storage facilities will be provided at the stadium or the nearby police station. Authorities also warned against leaving firearms inside vehicles, citing significant safety concerns.
All patrons should expect to undergo security screening upon entry. Additionally, smoking will not be permitted inside the stadium, and individuals who breach this rule may be required to leave.
Traffic changes are also scheduled to support the smooth staging of the championships.
A one-way traffic system will be implemented on Friday, March 27, and Saturday, March 28. During this period, Arthur Wint Drive will operate in a single direction from North Avenue to Roosevelt Avenue. The upper section of the roadway, between Mountain View Avenue and Gate E4, will also be restricted to one-way traffic to improve access to the stadium’s parking facilities.
Road closures and diversions are expected to begin from 2:00 p.m., depending on traffic conditions. A restricted zone will be established along Arthur Wint Drive between Roosevelt Avenue and Gate E4, with barriers positioned at both ends.
Public transportation and other vehicles heading toward Mountain View Avenue will be rerouted onto Roosevelt Avenue and Stanton Terrace.
Parking will be prohibited along several roads, including Arthur Wint Drive, Roosevelt Avenue, Stanton Terrace, Latham Avenue, North Avenue, and sections of Mountain View Avenue between Nannyville and Old Hope Road.
After each day’s activities, road closures will be lifted to facilitate the orderly departure of motorists. Arthur Wint Drive will then operate as a one-way route from the stadium to Tom Redcam Drive, while Roosevelt Avenue will carry one-way traffic toward Stanton Terrace. Latham Avenue will also be restricted to one-way movement from Roosevelt Avenue to Old Hope Road.
Motorists parked in the upper section of the stadium car park will exit using the upper portion of Arthur Wint Drive.
The police are urging members of the public to follow all instructions given by officers to ensure a safe and efficient event.
