Police Move Quickly in St. Elizabeth Sugar Smuggling Probe

Authorities have confirmed swift action in an ongoing investigation into an illegal sugar importation scheme that has already resulted in the arrest of two Chinese businessmen.

Senior Superintendent Oral Pascoe, who heads the Agricultural Protection Branch (APB), reported that officers acted promptly after receiving intelligence about the operation. The probe centers on a supermarket located in St. Elizabeth, where suspicious goods were discovered.

Law enforcement officials seized ten packages of brown sugar branded “Demerara Gold” during the operation. The label is associated with a well-known Guyanese product. Subsequent verification by the Sugar Industry Authority revealed that no official authorization had been granted for the importation or distribution of the items.

As a result, the goods were confiscated, and the business operators were taken into custody and formally charged under the Sugar Industry Control Act.

Investigators believe the case may extend beyond the individuals already detained. SSP Pascoe indicated that efforts are underway to identify and apprehend other persons who may be connected to the smuggling network.
