The St. Elizabeth Police are advising people not to attend an event planned for today in the Maroon community of Accompong because it will be considered a violation of the Covid-19 laws.
The authorities say they are also aware that the ceremony, which takes place every year to commemorate the beginning of the Maroon New Year, is attended by hundreds of people on a regular basis.
According to Order Number 12 of the existing Disaster Risk Management Act, or DRMA, public gatherings are restricted to no more than ten individuals each gathering.
The Ministry of Health and Wellness has also informed the St. Elizabeth Police that no approvals have been provided for the event.
The police are also urging the event’s organisers to comply with the Ministry of Health and Wellness’ cancellation order.
The police are reminding patrons that health officials have warned that incidents of Covid-19 are on the rise and that it is critical that individuals abide by the rules.
