KINGSTON, Jamaica — Police Constable Noel Maitland has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the 2022 disappearance and murder of his girlfriend, 24-year-old Donna-Lee Donaldson.
The ruling was delivered on Friday in the Home Circuit Court in downtown Kingston. In addition to the life sentence for murder, Maitland received two years imprisonment for preventing the lawful burial of a corpse. Both sentences will run concurrently.
Under the terms of the sentence, Maitland must serve 32 years and four months before becoming eligible for parole.
A seven-member jury found the policeman guilty of both charges on January 22, bringing an end to an eight-month trial that examined the circumstances surrounding Donaldson’s disappearance.
Donaldson was last seen in July 2022 at the Chelsea Manor apartment complex in St Andrew, where Maitland resided. At the time, the two were in a relationship.
The 24-year-old was known as a social media influencer and entrepreneur and also worked in the call-centre industry. Despite the conviction, her body has never been recovered.
Prior to the sentencing, Donaldson’s mother, Sophia Lugg, expressed that while the guilty verdict provided some measure of relief, the family still seeks answers regarding the whereabouts of her daughter’s remains and whether others were involved.
During the trial, prosecutors relied on circumstantial evidence, including blood belonging to Donaldson that investigators said was discovered on items inside Maitland’s apartment.
Following the conviction earlier this year, Maitland’s attorney, Christopher Townsend, indicated that his client continues to maintain his innocence and suggested that an appeal could be pursued.
