Kingston, Jamaica – Detectives from the Kingston Western Division have made a significant breakthrough in the investigation into the murder of Corporal Christopher Smith. A suspect linked to the fatal shooting was apprehended at the Norman Manley International Airport on Wednesday.
The identity of the detained individual is currently being withheld as the investigation continues.
Corporal Smith, a 47-year-old officer assigned to the Kingston West Division, tragically lost his life during an armed robbery at a Texaco gas station on East and Beechwood Avenues in St. Andrew last Friday night.
The incident occurred around 10:54 p.m. when the off-duty officer unknowingly drove into the scene of the robbery. A gunman, seeing Smith’s firearm, opened fire, fatally wounding him. The perpetrators then fled the scene in a waiting vehicle.
The brazen robbery also targeted gas station attendants, who were robbed of cash. The cashier inside the station was also robbed during the ordeal.
