A somber day in York County as a hostage situation at UPMC Memorial Hospital left one police officer dead and several others injured.
The incident, which unfolded Saturday morning, has shaken the community and sparked conversations about grief, mental health, and hospital security.
At approximately 10:30 a.m., Diogenes Archangel-Ortiz, armed with a semi-automatic handgun and zip ties, entered the hospital and proceeded to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), according to officials at a Saturday afternoon press conference. Archangel-Ortiz then took several hospital staff members hostage.
Tragically, the situation escalated, resulting in the deaths of Officer Andrew Duarte of the West York Borough Police Department, and the suspect, Diogenes Archangel-Ortiz.
Three other police officers were injured and are currently hospitalized in stable condition. A doctor, nurse, and custodian were also shot during the initial hostage taking and are now in stable condition. No patients were harmed in the incident, according to UPMC.
Preliminary investigations suggest that Archangel-Ortiz’s actions were motivated by grief and anger over the recent death of a family member who had been a patient in the ICU. A senior law enforcement official briefed on the investigation told ABC News that the family member had passed away within the last week, a loss that Archangel-Ortiz struggled to accept. He reportedly targeted the ICU and a medical team, including a doctor who had treated his relative.
York County District Attorney Tim Barker confirmed that officers from multiple agencies, including West York Borough Police, Pennsylvania State Police, and the York County Quick Response Team, responded to the scene. Negotiations with Archangel-Ortiz proved unsuccessful. The situation reached a critical point when Archangel-Ortiz emerged from the ICU holding a staff member hostage at gunpoint, her hands bound with zip ties.
”The officers were left with no recourse,” Barker stated. “They opened fire, killing Ortiz and preventing further loss of life.” Barker added, “After reviewing surveillance footage and witness statements, it is absolutely clear and beyond any doubt that the officers acted lawfully in using deadly force. Quite frankly, they needed to—because by doing so, they potentially saved even more lives.
Governor Josh Shapiro addressed the community, expressing his condolences and praising the bravery of law enforcement. “This is a huge loss to our community,” said District Attorney Barker, referring to the death of Officer Duarte. “Officer Duarte gave his life protecting others.”
The incident has left the York community reeling and grappling with the tragic loss of Officer Duarte. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are continuing to gather information about the events leading up to the standoff. The focus now shifts to supporting the families of the victims and the hospital staff affected by this traumatic event.
