Plans to replace the aging Belfield Police Station in St Mary are advancing, with architectural and engineering designs for a new facility slated for completion by the end of February 2026.
The current building, which houses both the police station and the Belfield Post Office, has fallen into severe disrepair. The structure suffered roof damage during Hurricane Beryl in July 2024 and again during Hurricane Melissa in October 2025. Reports also indicate ongoing issues with rodent and insect infestation.
Member of Parliament for St Mary South Eastern, Christopher Brown, said the deteriorated conditions have significantly hampered policing efforts in the community. He described the facility as unfit for purpose and raised concerns about the safety of officers assigned there.
Brown disclosed that upon taking office, he formally contacted Minister of National Security and Peace, Dr Horace Chang, outlining the urgent need for intervention. The correspondence, along with the minister’s reply, was made public.
In written communication from the Ministry of National Security, Minister Chang indicated that comprehensive technical evaluations determined the building could not be salvaged through standard repairs. Instead, a full redesign and reconstruction were deemed necessary.
The Ministry confirmed that once the design work is finalised, approval will be sought from the Postmaster General to allow for demolition and redevelopment of the property. The upgraded facility is intended to properly accommodate both the police station and the post office.
Following the required no-objection from the relevant authorities, the procurement process will begin to secure a contractor for the project. The property is owned by the Postal Corporation of Jamaica, and redevelopment plans include improvements to the adjoining post office.
