ST MARY, Jamaica — A 24-year-old man has been charged with the gruesome Labour Day murder of his uncle, a well-known mechanic in the Gayle community of St Mary.
Elsworth Gordon, otherwise known as “Junior,” was formally charged on Wednesday following a police interview conducted in the presence of his attorney. Gordon, who resides at a Gayle Rock address, is accused of fatally stabbing his uncle, 52-year-old Wordsworth Gordon—also known in the community as “Max”—on Friday, May 23.
According to police reports, the incident unfolded around 9:00 p.m. when Junior’s nine-year-old sister contacted their father in distress. She reportedly said Junior was covered in blood and holding a knife, while their uncle lay motionless in the living room of the family home.
The father immediately called his brother’s phone, and to his shock, Junior answered. It is alleged that he confessed to the stabbing during the call. Upon arriving at the house, the father discovered Wordsworth Gordon’s lifeless body on the floor. A blood-stained knife was found placed on a generator on the verandah.
With help from residents, the father restrained his son and called the police. Junior was later taken to the Port Maria Hospital under police guard for medical evaluation.
Sources close to the family have indicated that Junior has long struggled with mental health issues, though this has not been officially confirmed by authorities.
A court date has not yet been set. The St Mary police say investigations into the incident are ongoing.
