Murder Accused Dies in Custody in Portmore, Investigation Launched

ST. CATHERINE, Jamaica – The Inspectorate of Professional Standards Oversight Bureau (IPROB) and the Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) have jointly launched an investigation into the death of an inmate at the Portmore lockups in St. Catherine.

The deceased has been identified as 22-year-old Jerome Hayles, whose address is listed as 7 Rainford Road, Kingston.

According to reports, at approximately 8:35 a.m. on Monday, Hayles, who was in custody on a charge of murder, complained of feeling unwell. He was subsequently transported to the Spanish Town Hospital for medical attention.

Despite being taken to the hospital, Jerome Hayles succumbed to his illness and was pronounced dead.

The joint probe by IPROB and INDECOM will seek to determine the circumstances surrounding Hayles’s illness while in custody and the subsequent events leading to his death.
